OUR OBLIGATION
Ohio Natural Eggs has an obligation to not only do the right things on our farm, as well as off our farm within our community. AT A GLANCE
Backgorund
-
When completed, the farm will be a small, cage-free organic and free-range organic egg farm
-
80,000 hens in total with more than 21 square feet per bird outdoor access
-
Land is zoned for agriculture with forest space for flocks to use for foraging, dust bathing, weather protection
-
No more than 3 hen houses on the property
Becoming Free-Range Organic
- Farm will initially operate with 2 hen houses that will raise hens to organic standards, with cage-free housing, organic feed and access to a winter garden. A winter garden allows the birds covered access to the outdoors, while providing shelter and protection from predators and disease.
- Free-range organic production will begin, and the 3rd hen house will open, in 2020, when the farm’s land has fully converted to organic. At that time, all three hen houses will have access to the full outdoor yards beyond the winter gardens.
About Our Production
- Barns will have manure belts with blowers to prevent both odors and pests, and improve overall air quality.
- Our farm will have 100 percent cage-free housing with perches, nest boxes, scratching and dust bathing areas, as well as constant access to fresh water and organic feed. Once the farm’s land is fully converted to organic, the hens will also have full access to the outdoor yards.
- Eggs will be processed onsite, and organic grain will be purchased from local farms for the hens’ feed.
- No pesticides will be used on the land that the birds utilize or on any crops raised to feed flocks.
- The farm plans to participate in numerous standards-based certification programs, as well as meeting or exceeding compliance expectations of all local, state and federal regulatory programs for egg safety and environmental responsibility.
